Candles help create a certain look and feel around the house or apartment. Whether you like to burn tall tapers during dinner with friends or keep a candle in the bathroom or kitchen in hopes of keeping the air fresh, special care should be taken with all candles.

A portable space heater is a handy device to have around. It’s perfect for taking the chill off without firing up your primary heating system when you’re working or relaxing. Yet each year, hundreds of people are injured and thousands of fires are accidentally started by improperly used space heaters. According to the US Fire Administration, heating is the second leading cause of all residential building fires, which peak in cold winter months (especially January and February). Smother don’t splash! Small stovetop fires from grease or oil can be handled safely if you know how to react. The National Fire Protection Association reports that on average, seven people die in home fires every day. Following just any one of these tips could make your home safer from the many dangers of fire.

Alcohol and Fire: a Deadly Link. Sadly, alcohol is a contributing factor in more than 50% of adult fatalities related to fire. If you have a college-age member of your household, consider discussing the many risks of alcohol use with them – including putting them at greater risk in the event of a fire.

This month the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) will honor nearly 100 fallen firefighters by adding their names to the Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial’s Wall of Honor in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
