Frequently Asked Questions:
The Liberty Mutual Fire Safety Pledge Program

Below you will find some of our frequently asked questions. If you don't find the answer to your question here, please feel free to email us at team@befiresmart.com.

When is the Fire Safety Pledge Program?
Our program runs from September 1st through October 31st.  Winners are announced in November.

Who can win a grant?
Grants are available to any fire department in the fifty (50) United States, including the District of Columbia (excluding Puerto Rico and Guam).

How many grants will be awarded?
A total of 10 (ten) $10,000 grants will be awarded to fire departments at the conclusion of the Fire Safety Pledge Program.  A maximum of $100,000 will be awarded. Grants will be awarded in the following divisions, based upon community population:
  • Small: 10,000 or less residents - 2 grants
  • Medium: 10,001 to 100,000 residents - 6 grants
  • Large: 100,000+ residents - 2 grants

My town in small but my fire department shows up in the medium division.  Why?

Fire departments are classified by the population that they serve as reported by the National Public Safety Information Bureau.  So while the population of your town might be small, your fire department actually responds to calls in a wider area than your town itself and therefore is serving a larger population.

My local fire house is not in your database.  Why not?
While each individual community fire house is critically important to fire safety, these individual firehouses are part of a broader Fire Department that is servicing your area.  Our program is designed to support the entire department, including your individual fire house. If you are a supporter of your local fire house, find out which Department they belong to and credit your quiz to that department.

Can a fire department who won in previous years win again?
Yes, previously winning fire departments can participate again and are eligible to win again.

How many points can I credit to a fire department?
One credit to a fire department per email address is permitted.

How do I support my fire department in the Fire Safety Pledge Program?
When the Fire Safety Pledge program is open, community members and supporters are invited to complete the Fire Safety Pledge Quiz and credit the completed quiz to give a point to your local fire department.  The fire departments with the most points in their respective division will earn a grant.

How many points does it take to win?
During the Fire Safety Pledge Program, a leaderboard shows real-time results for each division!

Can I tell how many credits my fire department has?
Yes!  During the Fire Safety Pledge program, you can visit the leaderboard and search for the fire department you credited.

If our department is atop the leaderboard, does that mean we've won?
Unfortunately, no.  All credits are subject to final verification and in some cases, credits may be disqualified if they are found to be fraudulent.  As a result, leaderboard standings are unverified and are not final.

Do I have to verify my email address?  Why?
In order for your credit to count towards your selected fire department, you must verify your email address.  We use email verification as one form of fraud protection within this promotion.  Email verification helps us determine that a real person is on the other end participating in our program. It also ensures that you'll receive our email alerts to you regarding the winners.

How can I tell others about the Fire Safety Pledge Program?
Recommend your friends, family and community members visit www.befiresmart.com. During the program, we offer a free Fire Safety Pledge Program email tool to help you rally support in your community.  The tool allows you to enter your friend’s email address(s) manually, import from your online email provider (Yahoo, Gmail, etc.), or upload from your desktop email program, such as Microsoft Outlook.

Can I credit a Fire Department that is outside of the community I live in?
Yes, anyone who completes the quiz can credit any fire department - either one in their community or any one of the thousands of departments in the Fire Safety Pledge database.
