Be Fire Smart for Parents Liberty Mutual

Fire Safety Pledge Winners

Congratulations to the Liberty Mutual Be Fire Smart Pledge Program Fire Departments!

Last fall, tens of thousands of families across the country learned more about fire safety and home fire hazards through the interactive Fire Safety Pledge program. Families tested their fire safety knowledge with a short quiz and then credited a point to their local fire department. The fire departments in the communities that rallied the most support earned a $10,000 Pledge Award!

Crescent Springs - Villa Hills Fire And EMS

Crescent Springs, KY

The Crescent Springs Fire Department would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the residents of our city as well as all of our friends who supported us in our efforts to obtain this $10,000 grant. You have shown us that you are Fire Smart! Thank you again for all of your support.

The Crescent Springs Fire Department, celebrating over 75 years of service, proudly protects 13,000 people living in an area of 12 square miles - two suburbs of Cincinnati, Villa Hills (which was voted Americas most livable city), and Crescent Springs, as well as un-incorporated areas of Kenton County. Operating out of one station that protects a primarily residential area, the department is a private department whose members are on a combination of paid and volunteer status.

Upton Fire Department

Upton, MA

The Upton Fire Department would like to thank all community supporters who participated in this worthwhile program. The program not only provides the department with some sorely needed funding, but it also helped to promote the fire safety message. Without the support of the community and our families it would not have been possible for the department to qualify for this grant.

At the present time the money will be used to purchase necessary equipment such as turn-out gear and a thermal imager camera. Some of the funding will be allotted to our ongoing fire prevention program for preschool education and summer junior fire academies, which is the main focus of the grant program.

The Upton Fire Department was originally established in 1839 by the town. It consisted mainly of volunteers who supplied their own leather buckets. The department operates from one main station and has four full-time and 24 on-call firefighters. The department fleet consists of two 1500-gallon per minute pumpers, a heavy rescue, a 106' LTI ladder, two tankers (4,000 & 5,000 gallons), a brush truck that can also be used for structure fires and a pickup truck that carries a slide-in tank for brush operations and plows snow in the winter. The full-time staff, which includes the chief, supports the 24-member on-call staff during daytime hours and are also state certified Basic Level Emergency Medical Technicians operating two ambulances.

Ashburn Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department

Ashburn, VA

The men and women of Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue would like to thank the community for your generous support of AVFRD for this event specifically and for the many other ways they show their support, small and large throughout the year.

Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue was founded in 1944 under the motto of "Neighbors helping Neighbors." The money for the original fire truck was raised partly through a turkey shoot and was then housed in a dairy barn. A lot has changed over the last 65 years, but we have remained committed to the original goal of keeping our community safe. We currently staff 2 stations with 239 operational and administrative members. Our Operational members are combined fire and emergency medical services volunteers and responded to approximately 6,000 calls last year.

The AVFRD Board of directors has begun discussions on how to best use this "windfall." Although a final decision has not been made it will definitely be focused on safety-related project. AVFRD has safety concerns for both our fire rescue personnel safety on the scene of an accident and/or fire, and community safety. Every year we attend many community events; day care centers, health & wellness fairs at our senior centers, birthday parties, and neighborhood block parties. This funding will help make this project a reality.

Bay City Fire Rescue

Bay City, MI

The Bay City Fire Department would like to thank the community for their credits in the Br Fire Smart Pledge Program. Their continuous support and dedication to the Bay City Fire Department is truly appreciated. We plan on purchasing needed equipment that is not included in the normal budget process.

The Bay City Fire Department, established in the late 1800's, is a full-time professional fire department currently with 46 employees, of which 41 are in fire suppression and currently operate from three (3) fire stations located within the city limits, serving over 36,000 people.

Carmel Fire Department

Carmel, IN

The Carmel Fire Department would like to thank everyone who participated by completing the Fire Safety Quizzes and crediting our department! Thanks for spreading the word to friends, family, and co-workers to have them also help us win this $10,000 Pledge Award. The Carmel Fire Department placed 1st in its city size category and more excitingly, was the #1 winner in the nation for the Liberty Mutual Insurance 2009 Be Fire Smart Pledge Program. This is only possible because of you!

We are currently planning to purchase a training tool called the "Hazard House" that will assist with teaching fire safety to school groups and other groups in the community.

The Carmel Fire Department, a professional career department established in 1900, includes 164 personnel operating in six fire stations. The Department's jurisdiction of more than 51-square miles that includes the City of Carmel and Clay Township is located in Hamilton County, Indiana, serving approximately 88,000 people.

City Of Quincy Fire Department

Quincy, MA

The Quincy Fire Department would like to thank all of the city residents as well as all fellow city employees for their assistance with the Liberty Mutual Be Fire Smart Pledge campaign. We owe all that helped a deep debt of gratitude. In these very trying economic times the grant award will go a long way in filling various needs at the fire department. The grant award will be used to fund the purchase of much needed equipment for our firefighters.

The city of Quincy Fire Department serves a population of over 89,000. The city is 16.7 square miles with over 27 miles of coastline. There are 8 stations and 208 firefighters.

Westfield Fire Department

Westfield, IN

The Westfield Fire Department would like to thank everyone who took the time to take the Be Fire Smart quiz provided by Liberty Mutual and give credit to our fire department. Earning this $10,000 Pledge Award from Liberty Mutual Insurance was achieved by the dedication, spirit, and thoughtfulness of the Citizens of Westfield and the Citizens of Washington Township Hamilton County. Without their support and dedication, the Westfield Fire Department would not have been a recipient of this grant. The firefighters, paramedics, and officers of the Westfield Fire Department are proud to serve this great community. Your thoughtfulness and effort has paid off. We are honored to serve you.

The Westfield Fire Department currently services 56-square miles, including one of the fastest growing communities in Indiana, with a staff of 61 personnel in two fire houses, and plans for a new firehouse to be built within 2010. With the Pledge Award, we are planning on expanding our fire prevention activities to promote not only fire safety but to promote injury prevention as well. The 2010 City of Westfield Safety Festival will be expanded with these funds. We will also be promoting Fire & Life Safety classes for Senior Citizens and expanding fire extinguisher training class for the public.

Weymouth Fire Department

Weymouth, MA

Weymouth is a strong Community that has always put forth the effort necessary to take advantage of great opportunities, such as the Liberty Mutual BeFireSmart grant. Special thanks to Betsy Harris and the Weymouth Public Schools who were instrumental in helping us achieve our goal. Our gratitude is also extended to Mayor Susan Kay who fully supported this grant initiative.

These funds will be used to expand Fire and Life Safety training to Weymouth adults, along with students in grades 6 through 12. This sector of the population has been underserved due to budget constraints. To this point the majority of our resources have been focused on children in Kindergarten through Third grade.

Cincinnati Fire Department

Cincinnati, OH

The Cincinnati Fire Department would like to thank all of their community supporters - who have supported their mission in keeping the public safer. It is through this type of support that the Fire Department can maintain the future of critical programming like Fire Safety Education and Safe Summer Nights.

The Cincinnati Fire Department plans to use the $10,000 award for their Safe Summer Nights Program. "Safe Summer Nights" was created by the Cincinnati Fire Department in 1999. The program allows fire companies to target neighborhoods from May to October during evening hours, distributing and installing smoke alarms, batteries and carbon monoxide alarms for those in need. "Safe Summer Nights" originated in response to the amount of fire deaths the Department began to see in homes where occupants did not have a smoke alarm, and/or the alarm was not operational. Over 30,000 smoke alarms, 400 carbon monoxide alarms, and 5,800 individually packaged batteries have been distributed since the program started.

The funding will also be used to provide Fire Prevention & Safety materials to Fire Safety Education Coordinators who work to educate the public. These programs are tailored to individual audiences at Safety Fairs, Senior Safety Fairs, in schools and at local community centers.

Oklahoma City Fire Department

Oklahoma City, OK

We would like to thank every one who took the time and made the effort to participate in the competition. Your participation is the reason that we won! We hope you took the opportunity to learn many of the home fire safety tips that were available while you were helping us. A special "Thank You" to Liberty Mutual Insurance for providing this opportunity and assisting our community. We would also like to thank all the media groups who helped us in getting the information to the public, it really made the difference in our success. The Neighborhood Alliance and other associations were also instrumental in getting the information out to the communities that will now be receiving the benefit of this project. Thank You again, and don't forget, test your smoke alarms once a month and replace the battery at least once a year.

Project Life is a smoke alarm campaign designed to provide smoke alarms to individuals within our City who cannot afford to purchase them. We have purchased and distributed over 12,000 alarms to individuals throughout the OKC area over the last three years. In 2008, the program was redefined to focus on the inner-city area in an effort to center on the high-risk demographic of our City. All the smoke alarms that have been distributed were purchased by either grants or donated funds. These funds are greatly appreciated as they will allow us to continue the life-saving efforts we strive towards every day.
